Eyebrow Tattoo Cover-Up in Auckland: Fixing Brows That Turned Blue, Grey or Red

If your eyebrow tattoo has faded to a cool blue-grey, or gone warm and reddish, or simply no longer suits your face, you are not stuck with it. Correction and cover-up work makes up around 30% of the brow work we do at Hannah Beauty in Mt Eden.

It is also the work people put off longest, usually because they are worried it cannot be fixed, or that fixing it means ending up with something even darker. Here is how it actually works.

Why old brow tattoos change colour

Two things cause it, and they are worth telling apart, because they are corrected differently.

1. What the pigment was made of

Permanent makeup pigment does not stay the same colour forever. It breaks down in the skin, and how it breaks down depends on its composition.

Blue, grey or slate. Pigments with a high carbon content lose their warm tones first. What remains reads cool. Older machine work and some traditional cosmetic tattoo inks fade this way.

Red, orange or pink. Iron oxide based pigments do the opposite — the cool tones drop out and the remaining colour reads warm. This is common in brows that looked perfectly neutral when they were fresh.

2. How deep the needle went

This one is about the artist, not the pigment.

Permanent makeup belongs in a shallow, precise layer of the skin. If the needle goes deeper than it should, the pigment sits below where it was meant to sit — and pigment viewed through more layers of skin scatters light differently, so it reads blue-grey no matter what colour went in. It is the same reason veins look blue under the skin when the blood in them is not.

Depth that is too deep also makes the pigment migrate. Crisp hair strokes spread outwards over the years until they merge into one solid block of colour.

This is why we work with nano hairstroke and shading rather than microblading. A single fine needle on a digital machine gives far more control over depth than a hand blade cutting into the skin, and that control is the difference between brows that soften gracefully and brows that turn blue.

None of this means the original work was careless. Pigments and techniques have both moved on a long way.

Can it be covered?

Usually, yes. What we assess at the consultation:

• How dark and how saturated the existing pigment is. Light, evenly faded work is straightforward. Dense, solid colour is the harder case.
• How deep it was implanted. Pigment sitting deep is more stubborn and can show through new work.
• The existing shape. New brows have to sit over the old ones, so the old shape sets the boundaries. If the previous shape was drawn much higher or wider than your natural brow, there is less room to redesign.
• Your skin. Oily skin holds fine detail differently, which changes the balance of hair strokes and shading we use.

Colour correction with neutralising pigment

Most cover-ups do not need anything removed. They need the wrong tone cancelled out before the new colour goes on.

We do this with neutralising pigment — a corrective tone chosen to sit opposite the unwanted one on the colour wheel. Warm corrective tones neutralise brows that have gone blue or grey. Cooler tones bring back brows that have turned red or orange. Once the base underneath reads neutral, we build the new brow over it with nano hairstrokes and shading.

Most cover-ups finish in the same two appointments as new brows — the first session, then the perfecting session four to six weeks later.

When laser removal has to come first

There is a limit. If the previous work is very dark, very saturated, or the pigment sits too deep, no amount of corrective tone will neutralise it. Working over that base would only trap the problem under a new layer.

In those cases we will tell you honestly that you need laser removal first. We do not do removal ourselves, so we will refer you, and we ask you to come back six to eight weeks after your laser session so the skin has fully settled before we tattoo over it.

This is not the answer anyone hopes for. But it is a far better outcome than paying for a cover-up that was never going to hold.

What it costs

At Hannah Beauty the first session is $500 whether or not you have had work done somewhere else. Previous work does not add a surcharge.

A full set is $500 for the first session plus $200 for the perfecting session four to six weeks later. All prices include GST.

If your brows turn out to need laser removal first, that is a separate cost with whoever does the removal — and we will tell you before you book with us, not after.

This is the single most useful thing you can do, and one photo is enough.

Take it like the photo above:

• straight on, facing the camera — no side angles needed
• in natural daylight, not under bathroom or ceiling lights
• with no makeup on the brows
• with your hair pulled back so the whole brow area is visible

What to expect while it heals

Cover-up work heals like any brow tattoo, with one difference — the first few weeks can look busier, because you are seeing the new pigment and the old at the same time.

• Days 1 to 3 — darker and bolder than the final result.
• Days 4 to 7 — flaking and lightening, often patchy.
• Days 8 to 21 — the colour seems to disappear as it settles under the skin, then returns.
• Weeks 4 to 6 — the true healed colour is visible. This is when we do the perfecting session, and on a cover-up that appointment does more work than it would on untouched skin.

An honest note

A cover-up is not the same as starting with skin that has never been tattooed. If the old work is dark, the new brows will sit slightly deeper in tone than they otherwise would, and the shape has to work with what is already there.

What corrective pigment can almost always do is cancel a colour that has gone blue or red, soften a shape that is too harsh, and give you brows that read as brows rather than as a tattoo. What we will not do is promise a result we cannot deliver in order to get the booking — if you need laser first, we will say so.
